A couple notes if you plan to match them to 1x2 tilesApr 05, 2011 By McElligot's Pool First off, as a stand-alone tile, the Earthworks 1x1 stainless steel tiles are attractive, with a brushed stainless look - very nice! For that reason, I give the tile 5 stars. Now, given the way I needed to use them - and if you are in a similar situation - there are a few qualifiers to note and I would only give the tile 4 stars at this point. I bought the 1x1 Earthworks tiles to complete a kitchen backsplash I was installing using Earthwork's 1x2 stainless steel tiles in a "subway" brick pattern. To ensure I was getting as good a match as possible, I even contacted the seller to inquire if the two Earthworks tiles (1x1 and 1x2) were a match. The seller assured me the two tiles would match up - and they do, to a point. The surface material looks identical for both tile sizes (1x1 and 1x2). They are both a "brushed" stainless and look excellent together. The surface dimensions (1x1) of the tiles line up nicely with the surface dimensions of the 1x2 tiles, which was my question for the seller - so their assurances that surface dimensions would match up was accurate. But there is a difference in thickness between the two tile sizes - the 1x1 Earthworks tiles are noticeably thicker than the 1x2 Earthworks tiles. Why the apparently same style tiles from the same company would be different thicknesses is anybody's guess. While the thickness differential is noticeable when the tiles are installed, it doesn't seem an issue to our eyes. The fact that the tiles match up in surface dimension and material overcomes, at least to us, the thickness difference. In short: we can see the thickness difference when looking at the backsplash, but it doesn't bother us. Mileage may differ - it may bother you. The other issue with the 1x1 tiles was the relative ease at which the stainless steel overlay detached from the ceramic tile undeneath. Both the 1x1 and 1x2 tiles are a ceramic tile covered/wrapped by a stainless steel overlay, which has been glued/adhered to the ceramic tile underneath. As I worked with the 1x1 tiles, about 10% of the stainless overlays disconnected from the ceramic tile base. They can be glued on again - just means an extra step and hassle. A word of explanation here. The 1x2 tiles comprising most of the backsplash were a staggered subway brick pattern, so at each end of the backsplash (and around light switches and wall plugs) the staggered pattern created 1x1 gaps every other tile row. I ordered the 1x1 tiles to fill these gaps, rather than trying to cut the 1x2 tiles. This meant I was using the 1x1 tiles individually, so I had to remove them from the net backing holding the square foot sheet of tiles together. I had to be careful in the way I removed the tiles from the net backing or the stainless overlay would pop off. Had I not been removing the individual tiles from the net backing, the stainless overlays would not have popped off. With care, I found I could remove the tiles without incident. All in all, regardless of the tile thickness difference and the issue with the stainless overlays coming loose from the tile, this was still a far better solution than trying to cut the 1x2 tiles to fill the 1x1 gaps at the ends of the backsplash. Cutting the 1x2's would very likely have caused the stainless overlay to pop off the ceramic tile base and would also have left me with exposed ceramic tile showing on the edge that was cut. The tiles were very easy to install, even given the way I was using them (individual tiles cut from the net backing). Bottom line? These are nice, affordable stainless steel tiles. Once installed, they look super and give a timeless look to your kitchen. Obviously, if you're using all 1x1 tiles, you will have a very uniform look. But using them with the 1x2 tiles also works well, with only the few qualifiers above.
